The Foundation explores the relevance of Ruskin’s ideas today, undertaking intellectual enquiry and educational activity through a wide range of projects.

How To Be Rich

‘How To Be Rich’ is the comic book version of Ruskin’s Unto This Last, with which the Foundation started its educational outreach. 10,000 copies were distributed to schools as part of a larger educational project. Copies of the comic, together with teachers’ notes, lesson plans and activities, are available from the Foundation. To see a film about the project, click here .

Prison Work

In Haverigg Prison we have worked to help offenders launch a prison newspaper, The Haverigg Seagull. The newspaper is also distributed to the wider communities of Millom, and West Cumbria, and is set to become a community resource. Inmates working on the project receive accredited training from the NUJ. The Foundation has undertaken additional studies relating to issues in prisons in its region. If you are interested in learning more about our work in this area, please contact us.

The Ruskin journey

The Ruskin Journey: the Roots of Tomorrow is a project to explore the physical and cultural dimensions of Europe, revisiting Ruskin’s own journeys along the ‘Old Road’. It is both a sensual and intellectual odyssey which consists of a series of occasional, informal expeditions which you can undertake in company, and a trail which you can explore on your own with supporting resources, either at home, or on the ground. The project is a work in progress.
